LONG BEACH VA HOUSING

Location

Long Beach, CA

Designed in response to a critical need for dignified, community-centered housing for veterans, this seven-story, 72,000-square-foot supportive housing facility in Long Beach, California offers a model for how modular construction can serve both efficiency and humanity.

The client's challenge was threefold: deliver high-quality housing within the constraints of an affordable development budget, create compact yet comfortable units that feel like genuine homes rather than institutional spaces, and — most importantly — foster a sense of community and belonging among residents who may be navigating isolation and transition. The design needed to be efficient without feeling cold, and quiet without feeling withdrawn.

The structural approach employs volumetric steel modular units, enabling precision fabrication off-site and reducing construction time and waste. Each of the six levels is organized around a central common area positioned directly at the elevator landing, ensuring that every resident passes through a shared social space as a natural part of daily life — a subtle but deliberate design move that encourages spontaneous connection without demanding it.

At the building's crown, a rooftop amenity level serves as the social heart of the community. A generous common room opens onto a roof deck with panoramic views of the city, and includes a full kitchen, large dining table, game room, and oversized screen — spaces scaled for gathering, celebration, and belonging.

The result is a building that honors its residents: efficient in its means, warm in its character, and thoughtful in every detail.
