THE JOSHUA TREE RETREAT

A private contemporary retreat sited on approximately 260 acres of open desert landscape at the east entrance to Joshua Tree National Monument, this residence is conceived as a quiet, self-sustaining sanctuary designed to inhabit the desert with a light touch, minimal visual impact, and a deep sensitivity to the extraordinary natural environment that surrounds it.

The compound is organized as two distinct structures sharing a cohesive design language. The main residence is a single-story, 2,200-square-foot home comprising four bedroom suites, each with a dedicated bath, designed for comfort, privacy, and a seamless connection to the outdoors. The guest house is a 1,200-square-foot companion structure offering two bedroom suites with private baths, a dedicated living and kitchen area, and its own outdoor program. Both structures provide independence and privacy while remaining visually and experientially integrated into the overall compound. Vehicle parking is accommodated beneath a shaded canopy positioned discreetly on the site.

The project is built on the firm's established volumetric steel modular platform. A core living-kitchen module anchors each structure and bedroom suite modules are added to build out the full program. The module vocabulary shares components with the firm's ADU Series, allowing elements of this design to inform and expand future configurations. Factory installation of the majority of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems minimizes on-site construction time, with site work limited to pile foundation installation, solar array, well water filtration, and septic systems.

The structures are elevated on pile foundations, floating gently above the natural desert grade. This approach preserves the existing topography, allows rainwater to pass freely beneath the structure, and maintains undisturbed ground that provides sanctuary for desert wildlife. Native desert plantings and sculpted earthen berms establish privacy between structures and soften views from neighboring properties and public roads.

The desert climate and landscape are treated as primary design amenities. Large operable window-wall systems fully open the living areas to the outdoors, dissolving the boundary between interior and exterior. Covered and uncovered decks extend from all living areas and bedroom suites, functioning as genuine extensions of the interior program. Adjustable solar screening devices shade occupied spaces throughout the day, frame carefully considered views, and provide an additional layer of privacy. The main residence features a pool and the guest house offers private outdoor spas. Shared amenities across the compound include fire pits, outdoor kitchen and BBQ areas, and dedicated stargazing lounges designed to take full advantage of Joshua Tree's exceptional night skies. Hiking and trail access, rock climbing on the site's natural desert formations, mountain biking trails, and shaded meditation and yoga platforms complete the outdoor program.

The exterior palette of champagne anodized aluminum and complementary synthetic stone veneer cladding is drawn directly from the warm amber, rose, and gold tones of the desert at sunset — a residence that reflects and enhances the coloration of its landscape rather than competing with it. The compound operates entirely off-grid through a roof-mounted solar array, wind generation, battery storage, filtered well water, and a greywater recycling system. Sustainable, comfortable, and calm — this is a retreat designed to be inhabited slowly, encouraging stillness and attentiveness to one of California's most transcendent landscapes.
